The Lyrics of “Religiously”

This is a song of heartbreak, whereas the vocalist is forced to contend with the painful reality of his true sweetheart having successfully moved on with her life, while he has not been as fortunate, in a romantic sense, post-breakup.

And the reason the track is named “religiously” is twofold. One is as an adverb pointing to how faithful the addressee was when she and Bailey were together. That is what he misses about her the most, i.e. now being convinced that he will never find another partner who’s as committed.

So all lyrics considered, perhaps we can assume that it was Zimmerman who messed this relationship up.  And it’s only now, upon getting the rest of his life together, that he’s able to realize the mistake he made in losing the addressee, despite said dissolution transpiring a couple of years ago.

Secondly, as to be expected in today’s music climate and given the title of this track, its lyrical motif of this track revolves around the usage of various biblical-related terms. This is particularly true as far as the chorus and bridge are concerned. But again, the actual focus is one the vocalist and addressee’s broken romance, and the former being unable to recoup that loss.

“And now I’m in this cold bright light
And this don’t even feel like life
‘Cause I don’t have the only woman who believed in me
Religiously
And now I’m in the back of the church
Prayin’ just to stop the hurt
‘Cause I don’t have the only woman who was there for me
Religiously”
