Anyone familiar with Ashanti’s artistry knows the types of the love songs, such as “Rock wit U”, which defined her heyday. They tend to be pretty straightforward in sentiment, such as this song being focused on the vocalist’s adoration of her “baby”, i.e. the man she is smitten by.
But more specifically in this case, we find the singer is really enamored, most simply put, by the addressee’s lovemaking skills. Moreover, it is implied in the second verse that Ashanti really isn’t interested in official relationship titles and stuff like that. More important to the vocalist is simply securing a lasting commitment from the addressee.
So as far as the title goes, as presented in the chorus she is entreating him in that regard. Or put more plainly, the vocalist idealizes a future where she and her sweetheart are moving forward in life in unison.

In more recent years, with the last album she released (as of the writing of this post) being 2014’s Braveheart, Ashanti’s success as a musician has waned. However, she has also been able to make waves in the acting and modeling fields, in addition to remaining enduringly popular in the tabloids.

“Rock wit U (Awww Baby)” is one of Ashanti’s biggest hits. The song made it onto the top 10 of the UK Singles Chart and UK R&B Chart. Furthermore, it also replicated the feat on 5 different Billboard lists stateside. Its most notable achievement chart-wise has been reaching number 2 in the US. It also earned silver certification across the pond.
This song’s music video was filmed in Miami and is a product of director Paul Hunter. This clip was also very successful, in that it received a 2003 MTV VMA nomination.
This track is one of the singles from Ashanti’s “Chapter II” project. This project acts as her official second studio album. it was put out by Murder Inc.
Ashanti gets songwriting credit for “Rock with U” alongside Irv Gotti and Chink Santana. The latter two musicians also worked on the track’s production duties.
An English rapper named Aitch heavily sampled this song in his 2022 hit track titled “Baby“. The song was so successful that Ashanti herself praised it.
