“Skin of My Teeth” by Demi Lovato

In recent times, Demi Lovato has been arguably generating headlines more so due to issues with drug addiction than music.  And whereas, according to the singer, the first line of this song is meant to be critical of the media pimping the sad situation, so to speak, at the same time the focus of this song is in fact on the drug problem.

The title is derived from a line in the chorus which puts forth that the vocalist is ‘alive by the skin of their teeth’. That’s another way of basically saying that Demi went through something which nearly removed them from the mortal plane – a notion that is also poetically buttressed in the second verse. And again, the reason being is that the singer has “a –king disease”, which is a roundabout way of putting forth, all lyrics considered, that their struggles with addiction are ongoing.

And yes, on one hand, this song is designed to raise awareness to the fact that drug addiction is real. In other words, we may not know Demi Lovato personally, but we all undoubtedly have someone in life who is dealing with this selfsame issue. And what the vocalist is verifying is that being in that predicament can very much result in the death of the sufferer and, as depicted, is a war, not a one-time fight.

But going back to the first line and as more or less reiterated in the chorus, what these lyrics are also meant to relay is that Demi does not appreciate others using their personal problem as clickbait. Or put otherwise, drug addiction is not a matter to make light of in any way, shape or form.
