“Dead Friends” by Demi Lovato
Demi Lovato is an artist who is known to regularly memorialize deceased loved ones in song. So it is with “Dead Friends”, with Demi doing so in her own special way, i.e. wondering how she survived a journey “through hell” while some others she knows of who ventured therein are not around to tell the tale.
And amongst those individuals would be the late Mac Miller, who met his fate via a drug overdose back in 2018.
Lovato, of course, is a celebrity who has become known to have gone through some serious addiction issues of herself. So as explained, the sentiment that lies as the premise of this piece is actually, as Demi put it in her own words, “survivor’s guilt”. And such an emotional does successfully come through once again via the pre-chorus, where the singer admits that “it doesn’t feel right” that she’s still around while others in her orbit who took the same risks, i.e. lived an identical lifestyle, are not.
With that in mind, the thesis sentiment of this piece is in fact one of bereavement. The chorus puts it forth best, i.e. revealing the vocalist as someone who, most simply put, ‘misses her dead friends’. And accordingly a notable portion of the lyrics are just as much dedicated to her reminiscing on the good times she shared with such individuals, in addition to lamenting their absence more generally.
