“Freak” by Demi Lovato (ft. YUNGBLUD)

What’s being put forth in the song “Freak” in part speaks to the celebrity of the vocalists involved. The lives of people such as Demi Lovato and Yungblud are not like most of us, as pretty much wherever they go or whatever they do, they’re always in the spotlight. 

This intrinsically results in what can be deemed, according to Lovato’s own description, as a very high level of pressure, on top of some individuals just wanting to bring you down. And that acknowledgement on the behalf of the singers serves as the premise of this track.

Meanwhile, Yungblud and Demi are artists who have embraced this notion of being different, countercultural or “freaks”, as they put it in this piece. That is to say, viewed from a different angle, that even though they’re both mainstream successes, there are people who still perceive them as unusual, and not in a good sorta way.

For instance Yungblud is, well, Yungblud. He’s someone who seems to pride himself on being different in every way imaginable. And Demi more recently came out as nonbinary. To reiterate, in terms of Lovato already being an A list musician, in this day and age, identifying with the LGBT community can even help an artist’s career. But what’s being further implied is that no matter how many records she may sell, there’s still going to be people who will dislike her – for lack of a better word – due to taking such a stance. And all things considered that is indeed true. It is true that how the songstress utilizes gender pronouns and what have you will definitely have some looking at her as a “freak”.

Conclusion

So as far as the thesis sentiment goes, that would revolve around the vocalists actually embracing such a designation. Or put otherwise, since they don’t feel that they’re doing anything wrong, they likewise don’t get offended – in a manner of speaking – when others start to judge them. So it’s like, come and gawk and criticize and hate if you want. But as for the likes of Lovato and Yungblud, they’re going to continue to do their thing, even in the full eye of the public.

“Freak” is one of the more notable tracks from Demi Lovato’s “Holy Fvck”, as it not only opens up the album but also mark’s Lovato’s first team up with British musician Yungblud (who, for the record, is five years her junior). 

Both of the vocalists are credited with writing this song alongside Michal Pollack, Laura Veltz and three of the track’s producers, Keith Sorrells, Okay and Alex Niceforo. And Freak was also co-produced by Oscar Linnander.

Release Date

Island Records officially made this track public on 19 August 2022. And apparently it was first teased (with a snippet) about a month earlier, at the beginning of June, when “Holy Fvck” itself was announced.

Demi has implied that this is one of the first songs from “Holy Fvck ” that she began working on.
