“So Much More Than This” by Grace VanderWaal
“So Much More Than This” is a tune in which the American singer Grace VanderWaal is speaking of the intangible essence of life, whose importance supersedes the thoughts which usually preoccupy our minds. The track is premised on the idea that the things which people are usually concerned about, such as drama and social acceptance, don’t really matter. And what the songstress seems to be advocating instead is the search for inner peace, particularly through meditating on music and nature.
Grave is trying to tell the world that this peace is not founded upon external, interpersonal factors like a person’s looks or popularity. Indeed she finds applicable irony in her own come up as, before becoming a pop star, she seemed to have experienced a notable degree of “hate” at school. But now it’s like everybody favors her. Yet despite being 13-years old at the time “So Much More Than This” was released, VanderWaal was wise enough to perceive that their changing disposition was nothing to get excited about. Rather the whole situation just reminded her that there is “so much more” to life than being liked by people or being popular.
And once again, that’s the ultimate sentiment this track leads us to. The singer is espousing an ideology of inner peace and reflection as opposed to striving to meet society’s standards. She also supports the idea of getting unplugged – as in putting our communication devices down – and ‘breathing in the air’. She is basically advising us to enjoy the essential aspects of life which are given to us freely. So all in all, what Grace is out to let the audience know is that there is “so much more than this”, with the titular “this”, succinctly put, being our vain or conformist efforts.

VanderWaal released this tune through Columbia Records on 15 September 2017. This tune served as the second single issued from her maiden album. She titled that album Just the Beginning. VanderWaal was only 13 years old when this track came out.
FYI, this tune was also the third single of VanderWaal’s musical career. The first of her career was the 2016 hit song “I Don’t Know My Name“.
