“The City” by Grace VanderWaal
Throughout most of “The City” (i.e. the first verse and choruses), Grace VanderWaal is addressing what reads as if it is a romantic interest. And what she is doing is basically lamenting that this person prefers being “out in the city” as opposed to spending time with her.
The second verse however, is a bit different, as she doesn’t seem to be singing about this individual or even interpersonal relationships per se. Rather that particular section comes off as if it is meant to illustrate her inability to be happy. Yes, she does in fact have true friends. However, being with them does not deter a growing sense of depression. And it may be that such discontent is being caused, once again, by her boyfriend being elsewhere. For ultimately what this song boils down to is an expression of the singer’s disapproval of this person’s preference to hanging “out in the city” while she is elsewhere.
