“So You Are Tired” by Sufjan Stevens
American alt musician Sufjan Stevens’s 10th studio album is titled “Javelin”. As far as solo efforts go, this is the follow-up to 2021’s “Convocations”. But to note, in-between then and now, Stevens also dropped a collaborative album, “A Beginner’s Mind” (2021), in conjunction with another Asthmatic Kitty artist named Angelo De Augustine.
As a preview of “Javelin”, Asthmatic Kitty issued its lead single, “So You Are Tried”, on 14 August 2023. This song was both written and produced by Sufjan, who besides being a singer is also a multi-instrumentalist.
The Lyrics of “So You’re Tired”
The title of this song, in context, points to the addressee being “tired” of the vocalist. That means that said individual has grown weary of their relationship. And all things considered, including the first line of the fifth verse, the two of them are likely lovers.
So what dealing with here, underneath all of the poeticism, is basically a breakup song. As implied, Sufjan has remained committed to this relationship. The vocalist, in this case, comes off as someone who doesn’t think too highly of himself. But one goal he did proudly accomplish was remaining faithful to the addressee. And this is despite the fact that, as also insinuated, Stevens became cognizant that the other party lost interest a long time ago.
At the end of the day, these lyrics are imbued with a poetic sense of futility, reflecting the musings of a man who has no choice but to acknowledge that the feelings he has for his significant other are not reciprocal and furthermore that his partner apparently wants to bounce.
