“Suffer” by Hurts

Hurts’ “Suffer” finds the narrator being tortured by his intense addiction to a particular dark entity. The exact identity of this mysterious entity isn’t clearly stated in the lyrics. However, it appears to be someone he is romantically attracted to. And despite the fact that his addiction to this person causes him so much misery, he apparently doesn’t want to be free from the addiction.

Having said the above, it should also be stated that some music pundits believe that this entity the narrator is referring to could actually not be human. Some have suggested that it could be something like a drug, which the narrator is addicted to. However, there are no concrete signs in the lyrics to support this assertion.

Signs Addressee could be Human

The narrator tells them to the following. And the actions requested below from the addressee are signs that he/she is likely a human being.

  • “Show” him their “sexy little intellect”
  • “Whisper” something and run their “fingers” down his body
  • “Tilt” back their head
  • “Touch” him and make him feel the misery inherent in them

Only humans can be attributed with the characteristics or traits above. But then again, it could all be a sheer case of heavy personification. A case in which the narrator is attributing human traits and characteristics to a non-human object.

Song’s Title (“Suffer”)

But human or non-human, the song’s title (“Suffer”), is obviously making reference to one thing. And that is the agony the narrator derives from his addiction.

“I feel, I suffer
I lose myself in you”
