Hurts’ “Redemption” Lyrics Meaning

“Redemption” is a ballad performed by English music duo Hurts. This ballad tells the tale of a man whose life has been characterized by evil deeds. However, he has gotten to the point where he is sorry for his past sins and is in desperate need of redemption. And in his quest to be saved and freed from his sins, he desperately pleads with an entity named “Father”. He asked this entity to show him some mercy and give him some comfort. It is beyond apparent said “Father” is a reference to “God”.

Actually we are so certain that the “Father” he mentions is God. And why? This is because he categorically mentions God in the first line of the song’s first verse. There, he tells the listener how far away he feels from the presence of God. He obviously feels this level of separation from himself and God because of his past wicked deeds.

“I’m just trying to find some) redemption”

According to the duo’s lead singer Theo Hutchcraft, the lyrics of “Redemption” are about “fear and doubt”. He revealed in an interview that the song was birthed during a very difficult time in the course of making the album on which it appears. He referred to that moment as a “beautiful moment of clarity”.

The reasoning he mentions it in the first lines isn’t what makes it clear. Its very clear what and who Father refers to without saying anything about God. Why are the words minced? It reads like someone is trying to convince themselves to me and makes me curious to those thoughts. Was it uncomfortable or careful or what. We should be able to express more with each other, especially when it comes to music. Its kind if sad when we feel we can’t be ourselves and what we are. Human. This song is a beautiful and poetic way to express the battles and conflicts in life and salvation. His faith was weak and life has been a long, hard road. And when you doubt your beliefs and get to the point of that possibility you lost all faith and may not believe Father is real, it pummels you. To stand and face that kind of betrayal within yourself is one of the most damning feelings there is. You have to choose defeat, and hate yourself for it; or get on your knees and plead for His mercy on your soul. Facing demons like that can’t be put into words easily. You feel lost and in the dark. Then one day you see a glimpse of light. And for the first time In what seems like an eternity you feel hopeful. You don’t feel lost or so alone. Redemption steps in and gives you peace. How long will it last this time? It’s one of the biggest battles to face as the conflict drags you up the side of a mountain and then down to the depths of the sea. This is one of the most beautiful songs I have heard. I’m a fan and respect them for this. That’s a bigger compliment to them than anything else I could say. The bands name is more like a song than a name. How’s that for poetic brilliance?! The meanings and what they create is genius.
