“Talking To Yourself” by Carly Rae Jepsen
There’s a lot to be dissected in Carly Rae Jepsen’s “Talking to Yourself”. What the narrative revolves around, most simply explained, is the vocalist being under the impression that her ex is still in love with her. For instance, he may be out getting his bonk on. But Carly believes that even when he does, it’s really just a way of him mitigating the pain of their separation. And that’s ultimately what the singer is getting at via the phrase “talking to yourself” – as somewhat unconventionally used in this piece – i.e. the unavoidability of the vocalist thinking about her constantly.
But the story doesn’t conclude there, like some other heartbreak songs coming out these days. Instead, the second verse goes on to strongly imply that the aforementioned separation is largely the fault of the addressee, i.e. Carly’s ex. Or at least that’s how she feels, as if maybe he’s trying to punish her as if she’s the source of his own shortcomings. But that of course that’s basically what’s being insinuated throughout, that their breakup isn’t about lack of true love but rather irreconcilable differences.
Summary: All in all, Carly is convinced that her ex lover still loves her, even if he has moved on to other ladies.
