Tame Impala’s “Breathe Deeper” Lyrics Meaning

The title of this song (“Breathe Deeper”) is actually a reference to deep-breathing exercises. More specifically methodic, conscious breathing is widely recognized as a means of effectively getting relief from the torments of stress. And in this song, Kevin Parker is espousing this technique in such a manner. In other words, instead of letting frustrating situations get the best of him or her, the singer is instructing the addressee to “breathe a little deeper” when confronted with such challenges. And the insinuation is not only that Kevin practices this technique himself but is also qualified to serve as a guide to the addressee in that regard. 

Indeed once said individual is able to practice it proficiently, then it is further implied that he and Kevin can actually chill together as one. Or perhaps more to the point is that since Parker has realized how to deal with situations via such a peaceful technique, it would be hard for the addressee to hang with him if he or she doesn’t master the same.

So all things considered, this song definitely has a transcendental feel. For overall it can be said to be presenting deep breathing as an ideal practice in both controlling one’s emotions and in reaching a higher sense of enlightenment.
