“The Kids Are Coming” by Tones and I

Tones and I’s “The Kids Are Coming” serves as the voice of her generation, i.e. “the kids”. And as with other recent pop tracks in which the artists have taken on a similar role, she is presenting the overall scenario as one where they are at odds with their elders. For example, from the onset, it is revealed that people perceive “the kids” as being untruthful, monotonous and in that regard unfavorable characters.

However, the singer points out that such classifications are unjustified. Instead the youth are actually “too busy” trying to implement desired changes, via peaceful means, as opposed to getting caught up in negativity.

And in the second verse she chalks the aforementioned negative stereotypes to two factors. One is that the “the kids” are in fact misunderstood. And the second is that whereas they may be subject to the rules of their elders, their thoughts don’t align with those of the older generation at all. Or put differently, “the kids” are very much committed to implementing change, as in ‘cleaning up the mess’ that has been made by their forefathers. And that’s the ultimate idea that the title, “the kids are coming”, is meant to allude to. The younger generation, which the singer considers herself as being a part of, is hell-bent on making significant changes modifications to society though once again via the medium of nonviolent protest.

The old man talking about the kids with their “millenium items” and “hopscotch” is from Yugioh Abridged by LittleKuribo on Youtube. I noticed this when listening to the song for the first time and I haven’t seen anyone mentioning the sampling so I figured I’d make it known for anyone who was curious.
