“Unknown (To You)” by Jacob Banks

Jacob Banks’ “Unknown (To You) is a breakup song based on a relationship in which the narrator, by all indications has behaved immaturely. This can be ascertained not from allegations being made against him but rather what he insinuates about himself. And in that regard, it can be concluded that he treated the addressee of this track (his soon-to-be estranged partner) with cruelty, disrespect and indifference.

Now he is faced with a situation in which he knows that they are about to part ways, this time for good. And considering the tone of the song, this is something he is very hurt about despite understanding that he deserves it.

The titular phrase “unknown to you” is derived from the chorus in which Banks recognizes that not only is the bond coming to an end, but also the relationship is headed down a path when ultimately the addressee will no longer even acknowledge his existence.

And that brings us to the true sentiment behind this track. And what’s this sentiment? It’s a sentiment in which the singer is imploring the addressee to be painfully honest with him. He wants them to be honest with him, regardless of knowing that the words which are set to come out of their mouth are not going to please him. In other words, he is actually anticipating they tell him that they have no intention of dealing with him in the future.

I’m flabbergasted why this song is not the number one song in the nation on the pop charts. It’s great. Radio has never played it to my knowledge. What’s up with that? Same thing with Collide by Tiana Major9 & EarthGang. What is going on???

  3. Drew says:

Very powerful lyrics. Acknowledging wrong has been done and accepting the consequences that are coming.

  4. Gregory Rheubottom says:

From every man that has been imprisoned an estranged from his children and family; from every man that finds himself before the Family Court for abuse or neglect; from every man that has done some wrong and “paid for it” thank you for the words, the introspection, the self-examination and the healing.
