“We’re In Love” by boygenius
As with virtually all of the songs found on Boygenius’s album “The Record”, the writing and production of this one is credited to the trio of musicians that make up this act, who are:
- Lucy Dacus
- Phoebe Bridgers
- Julien Baker
However, in this case, it is known that “We’re in Love” was penned primarily by Dacus (who also serves as lead vocalist), with Bridgers also making some lyrical contributions. And as for Baker, at first she did not want this song on the album, according to one report because it was too lengthy and according to another because of the personal nature of the wording, which is specifically based on the friendship between these ladies.
The Lyrics of “We’re In Love”
So with that in mind, it has been pointed out that the “love” referred to in the title is actually a platonic one. The earlier parts of the song, i.e. the first verse, does initially give the impression that the vocalist and addressee may be in a romance. But as the piece progresses, the lyrics also become more-generally applicable, in a manner of speaking.
In other words, it isn’t so much about the nature of the vocalist’s love for the addressee, i.e. Lucy being smitten or anything like that. Rather, it’s more along the lines of the singer desiring to have a permanently-sentimental place in the addressee’s heart, as is vice versa.
Or put otherwise, she envisions a day, “some October in the future”, where the two of them will obviously not be as close as they are now. But even then, the vocalist foresees that her love for the addressee will remain strong, to the point where she will remain compelled to publicly express it in song for instance.
Some of the lyrics, as poetic as they may be, seem as if they are based on the ladies’ personal relationship (i.e. the one between Dacus and Bridgers) and therefore may not be readily understandable to us listeners. For instance ‘the walk they took in the Redwoods’, as expressed in the bridge, may be a literal as opposed to symbolic occurrence.
But all things considered that likely isn’t the point anyway, i.e. us listeners knowing the exquisite details behind everything that’s being put forth. Or let’s say that despite the overall poeticness of We’re in Love its thesis sentiment still comes across quite clearly, which is, to reiterate, the vocalist’s lasting feelings for the addressee.
“I feel crazy in ways I never say
Will you still love me if it turns out I’m insane?
I know what you’ll say, but it helps to hear you say it anyway”
