5 Seconds of Summer – No Shame
5 Seconds of Summer’s “No Shame” may be a bit more complicated than it outwardly appears. For instance, it seems obvious that the narrator is attributing the titular characteristic to the addressee(s). But it can also be interpreted as him saying that he too has “no shame”. More specifically, the overall topic of this track is his celebrity. And in that regard, the primary sentiment that is being relayed is apparently his dissatisfaction with the way certain fans treat him. Yes, he does use a lot of exquisite metaphors to get his feelings across. But ultimately what he appears to be doing is presenting said fans as being abusive and fickle. In other words they don’t have any qualms concerning the way they treat him.
And if he says things they don’t like, they would promptly replace him with another musician. But also in terms of himself, despite acknowledging these characteristics in his audience, he still goes all out to please them. So that would be how he too has “no shame”. Thus even though this song may come off as if he is judging the addressee, he sees how his actions also contribute to this less-than-ideal reality of being a pop singer. But at the end of the day, as the song concludes, he ‘loves the way they’re screaming his name’. So it can be said that he is willing to sacrifice a certain percentage of his own emotional wellbeing in the name of being the recipient of the adoration of these ‘shameless’ people.
