“Systems Down” by AC/DC

AC/DC’s “Systems Down” is about a systems’ failure which is apparently the result of a furnace burning out of control. So the setting appears as if it may be in some sort of industrial plant or an equally potentially-dangerous facility. And the way the lyrics play out, it can be hypothesized that the scenario is actually metaphorical, pointing to the uncontrollability of the artist. Indeed unbridled living is one of the inherent subthemes of the Power Up project (which this song is part of).  However, at least according to Rolling Stone, such is not the case. Rather they argue that the lyrics of are literally “about a furnace that’s about to blast”.

“Systems Down” is another collaborative writing effort between Malcolm Young and Angus Young, the former of whom didn’t live to see the release of the track. Its issuance, via Sony and Columbia, took place on 13 November 2020.

Unlike AC/DC the producer of this song is from America, not Australia. And that would be one Brendan O’Brien.

To me it’s a high spirited rallying cry to bringing down whatever is in the way. It could be appropriate at a football game or revolution!

    It’s about the planet.

I say it’s about the earth

I say it’s about the imminent collapse of the world as we know it. The question is, “Who put this revelation in to an AC/DC” song and why?”

I think the album is about maximum overdrive.
    starting with Systems down,
The song sets a scene, things are getting wild, the heat slowly rises as emissions are still pumping. A flame (nuclear warfare) game ends humanity. (See the flames scorching everything it seeks)
Or it’s a metaphor for a wild uncontrollable spread.
(We have a chain reaction, one device witness and joins the fun, like the film)
The furnace is probably literal, a furnace goes into overdrive and burns the home down.
“And they all fall down” maybe referring to Rome; and the things we don’t know.
“Untamed, like a tiger searching feed”
(If you’ve seen the film, you’ll know the machines hunt everything.)
“Ain’t no game, as the earth shakes beneath your feet”
I don’t need to explain machines are heavy and rumble the surface.
It not being a game refers to the seriousness of the situation at hand.
“We’ve got a plan of action”
    “Overload”
I guess ultimately, who really knows if this place implodes.
Systems down, overload. Watch it burn to the ground.
But of course, all music is open for listener interpretation, I just think rocking to AC/DC is the right way. (For me)
