“We’re Good” by Dua Lipa

Let’s get this out of the way from the jump – it has been concluded “We’re Good” is not about Anwar Hadid, Dua Lipa’s current boyfriend. Anwar Hadid, the younger brother of supermodels Gigi and Bella Hadid, began dating Dua Lipa in 2019. And by all indications their relationship is still going strong as of the release of this track. It has been hypothesized though that the songstress may be addressing one of her real-life exes, which is something we will get into a bit later.

The lyrics center on the singer telling the addressee, who within the timeframe of the song would be her current boyfriend, that the time has come for the two of them to go their separate ways. From her own personal standpoint, she feels that the two of them do not have any type of rapport. And as revealed in the second verse, she is also convinced that dude wants to date other ladies but is ‘hiding’ the fact.

Not a Traditional Breakup Tune

However, where this track deviates from your conventional breakup song is via its titular sentiment. And what the expression “we’re good” represents is the singer’s desire to part ways with her boyfriend on a good note. In other words, she doesn’t want them to harbor any ill feelings towards each other. Rather she wants the two of them to remain friends, as some would say, even after breaking up.

The way she understands the situation is that they both tried to make it work, but ultimately they were “not meant to be”. As such, she doesn’t have any beef with him. But in the bridge, it is made known that he is not taking the matter as casually.  Instead, let’s just say that regardless of how euphemistically Dua depicts what’s transpiring, at the end of the day what it ultimately boils down to, especially from his perspective, is her dumping dude.

Or stated differently whereas she feels they should part ways, he disagrees. In his eyes, he is beyond certain that she is doing him dirty. But either way she wants him to likewise acknowledge that ‘they’re good’ so that idealistically they can breakup in peace.

Which of Dua Lipa’s exes is “We’re Good” about?

Meanwhile in terms of which of her real-life exes the lyrics can be about, Lipa dated a well-known model/chef named Isaac Carew. Their relationship was on-and-off, during most of the 2010s. And at least one prominent music site has put forth that “We’re Good” may well be about the two of them breaking up, which transpired in 2019. The pair reportedly called it quits due to scheduling conflicts. And whereas their breakup wasn’t all lovey-dovey, it wasn’t really a tumultuous one either.

But that being said, with the two of them having officially dated for almost five years and being associated even longer than that, then logically there would have been some hurt feelings when it all came to an end.

Conclusion

Conclusively, Lipa herself has explained the meaning of this song as being more an espousement of self-will than romantic freedom per se. Or as she has elaborated, individuals should be free to call off romances without the other party getting upset. That is not usually how such matters actually transpire, especially when one or both parties involved may be in love.  But either way, once again based on her explanation, the insinuation is that the song is not based on any of her former lovers per se.

Facts about “We’re Good”

This track is from The Moonlight Edition of Dua Lipa’s 2020 album “Future Nostalgia”. Said reissue took place on 11 February 2021 via Warner Records, which is also the official release date of this track. Additionally “We’re Good” serves as the lead single from that side of the project.

For the record, even since “Future Nostalgia” first came out, Dua Lipa had always intended to release an extended (i.e. Moonlight) edition. So the insinuation is that she has been sitting on this song for about a year (or more) before releasing it. And other new tracks she put out as part of The Moonlight Edition are “If It Ain’t Me” and “That Kind of Woman”.

“We’re Good” is the first song Lipa released in 2021. And at the time, she is 25 years old.

The music video to this track employed Gal Muggia and Vania Heymann as its directors. Said clip is partially based on the story of the Titanic (as depicted in the classic 1997 film) – the infamous ‘unsinkable’ cruise ship which did in fact sink back in 1912 (claiming over 1,500 lives in the process).

Dua also took a very-fashionable approach to the visual, wearing clothing by luxury fashion brands Miu Miu, Prada and Marc Jacobs. And the clip opens with the depiction of a famous painting called The Abduction of Europa which dates back to the 18th century.

The video also features a subplot centered on a lobster.

Lipa wrote “We’re Good” alongside the track’s three producers, who are Emily Warren, Scott Harris and another musician known simply as SLY.
