“Potion” by Calvin Harris, Dua Lipa & Young Thug
After having collaborated with Dua Lipa and Young Thug on separate tracks, Calvin Harris has decided to join these two forces for summer hit “Potion”. This also acts as the first new single Young Thug is officially appearing on since being indicted on racketeering charges in early May 2022.
The track, together with its chill vibes, focuses mainly on sex. Dua expresses how with the right mood set, talking till late at night with someone you’re sexually attracted to eventually leads to physical intimacy and ultimately, having the best orga-m.
Young Thug continues by showcasing his playboy side. He doesn’t need love, in fact, he runs away from it. He’d rather have sex with lose women or bi–hes, as he calls them. In fact, Thug doesn’t shy away from telling the world he’s so fickle to the point of having “fifteen million hoes”. Thug being all about the gangsta lifestyle, nods to the Black Mafia Family’s leader “Big Meech” who’s currently serving sentence at USP Lompoc in California.
“Big Meech”
“Big Meech” was arrested in 2005 on a number of charges including distributing narcotics and running a criminal enterprise. Meech and his brother, Terry, ran the largest drug trafficking and money laundering rings in Detroit’s history.
While incarcerated, “Big Meech” underwent drug treatment and earned his GED. His lawyer has stated that he has shown “strong commitment to rehabilitation”. This resulted in his sentence being shortened by three years.
Lebron James
Besides “Big Meech”, Thug also mentions professional basketball player for the Lakers Lebron James. James, who is often compared to Michael Jordan, has been considered as one of the greatest basketball players of all time. In the line, “Ball like Lebron James in the finals”, Thug could be deemed as referring to his sex game as the best of the best.
Release of “Potion”
“Potion” was released on 27th May, 2022 by Sony Music Entertainment. It acts as the lead single to Harris’ “Funk Wav. Bounces Vol. 2.” album.
A day before its official release, Harris posted up a cover image of the track set on rocks with the sea in the background. It garnered a lot of comments expressing their excitement and readiness to hear the new track.
On 25th May, 2022, Harris released a video on social media, showing fans he created “Potion” in the studio. The video, which appears on TikTok, ends with him FaceTiming Dua.
