“Break My Heart” by Dua Lipa

Dua Lipa’s “Break My Heart” is premised on the singer being well-tenured in the field of romance. In other words, she has dealt with various dudes in the past and comes off as somewhat of a female playa, i.e. the one who tends to terminate these romances when she gets bored. But now she has met someone new, that being the addressee. And this individual has a different effect on her. Or to put things bluntly, it’s like she is falling in love for the first time. And now she is afraid for her own emotional well being, as the same power she exercised over lovers in the past, now someone has that advantage over her. Or stated otherwise she is stuck on this individual.

So in light of acknowledging these emotions, she also understands that the addressee actually has to power to ‘break her heart’. And such is the thesis sentiment of the lyrics. And it is basically Dua recognizing that falling in love with someone also means said individual can potentially leave her heartbroken.
