“All of Me” by John Legend

Anyone who ever actually heard this tune can instantly attest to the fact that it is a love song, even if they don’t know the actual words. This is simply due to John Legend’s effectively-emotive rendering. Indeed besides the singer being a genuine vocal talent, this song truly came from his heart. More specifically it is dedicated to Chrissy Teigen, whom some readers would recognize as the lady John Legend married in 2013, the same year this track was released. In fact scenes from their wedding, which took place in a scenic part of Italy known as Lake Como, are actually featured on the music video to “All of Me”.

And concerning the title of the song, it is indicative of the fact that John loves Chrissy dearly. Or as he puts it, ‘all of him’ adores ‘all of her’. Yes, he recognizes that she has some “imperfections”. But he is so smitten that even what can be interpreted as her shortcomings or bad times still has him enamored.

So again, “All of Me” is the type of track in which what you hear is what you get. And what is heard is a talented singer pouring his heart out in relation to the woman he wants to spend the rest of his life with.

Music Video

The official music video, which was directed by Nabil Elderkin, prove to be a major success, having accumulated nearly 2,000,000,000 views (in addition to over 9,000,000 likes) on YouTube as of 2020. It was filmed in Italy and features Chrissy Teigen, including footage from she and John’s wedding and honeymoon.

Release Date of “All of Me”

This track, which ranks amongst John Legend’s greatest hits, was released as the third single from his album “Love in the Future” on 12 August 2013. The labels that put it out are Columbia Records and Kanye West’s GOOD Music.

John Legend premiered this track via the talk show Oprah’s Next Chapter during June of 2013.

Writing of “All of Me”

Legend served as both a writer and producer of “All of Me”. Production-wise he worked alongside Dave Tozer, and the other co-writer is Toby Gad.

It was actually Toby Gad who inspired Legend to pen this tune. And she wanted him to create a song along a similar sentimental vein to Billy Joel’s 1977 tune, “She’s Always a Woman“.

According to producer Dave Tozer, he utilized “some robots”, albeit subtly, to harmonize John Legend’s vocals on this track.

Success on the Charts

“All of Me” went on to top the Billboard Hot 100 in addition to 6 other Billboard charts.  This was the first time John Legend actually topped the Hot 100, even though he first appeared on the list way back in May of 2004. And the success of the track is largely attributable to the fact John performed it during the 2014 Grammy Awards.

Overall the song reached number 1 in over 10 of the nearly 30 countries it charted in.  And it also managed to attain multi-Platinum status in 10 nations. Indeed it is noted as being one of the top-selling songs of 2014, having sold over 12,000,000  copies worldwide as of the year 2020.

Remix of “All of Me”

Additionally a remix of this song, which was produced by a Dutch DJ named Tiësto, took home a Grammy Award in 2015.

John Legend and Chrissy Teigen’s Love Story

Described as one of Hollywood’s most beautiful unions, John and Chrissy’s love story has been an exemplary one that most fans admire. Legend, 28 first met 20-year-old Chrissy on the set of the music video for his song titled Stereo. They spent at least 12 hours together that day, ate In-N-Out burgers and marked the start of a long standing romance.

Their debut red carpet appearance was in February 2008 at the 50th Grammy Awards, and Legend finally proposed to Teigen in December 2011 in a Christmas-themed dinner.

Their wedding which took place in September 2013, a month before the release of the music video of “All of Me”.

The couple welcomed their first child, Luna Simone Stephens, in April 2016 and their second child, Miles Theodore Stephens, in May 2018. John and his wife were expecting a third child they had already named Jack in September 2020 but the couple revealed that Chrissy had miscarried shortly after being hospitalized.
