“Like I’m Gonna Lose You” by Meghan Trainor (ft. John Legend)

This history behind “Like I’m Gonna Lose You” is that Meghan Trainor conceptualized it after having a harrowing, realistic dream that someone she loved died. And the first verse of the track is based on that experience. She has such a nightmare where she is walking with a loved one, presumably a romantic interest, in the moonlight. And just like that this person disappears, insinuating that he has died. The result is the singer ‘wakes up in tears’. But upon doing so she realizes that verily this selfsame individual is safe and sound, indeed resting right by her side. However, the whole experience has reminded her that no one is “promised tomorrow”. Thus she decides, as illustrated in the chorus, to love the person whom she had this dream about in a more-vigorous fashion in acknowledgment of this eye opener.

John Legend steps in

And basically John Legend’s verse operates along that same philosophy. He understands that “in the blink of an eye” the person he loves, i.e. his romantic partner, could be gone forever. And as such he wants to “make the most of the minutes” that they do in fact have together.

So ultimately, the artists decide to love their partners ‘like they’re going to lose them’. Or stated differently from henceforth they will operate, in their romances, under the disposition that their partner will indeed one day be gone, in a way in which they cannot actually predict when such will transpire.

This song marks the first collaboration between Meghan Trainor and John Legend. And it is also the only track on her album, “Title”, which features a co-star.

Meghan Trainor wrote this song along with Justin Weaver and Caitlyn Smith. And the track was produced by Chris Gelbuda and had Constellation Jones as the director of its music video.

Meghan Trainor is acknowledged as the one who conceptualized this song. She did so after having a harrowing, realistic dream that someone she loved died, and it was originally more along the lines of a reggae tune. She held onto it for years, being reluctant to present it to her management. Indeed it was her uncle who actually compelled her managers to listen to the demo. And in the process, one of them was actually brought to tears, with the ultimate result being “Like I’m Gonna Lose You” being featured on Trainor’s debut album (under a major label).

And it just so happens that Meghan and John are under the same management. So whereas “Like I’m Gonna Lose You” was originally intended to be recited as a solo, when Legend got a wind of the tune (via super producer L.A. Reid) he requested ‘to be a part of it’ also. And of course Meghan herself was totally excited due to the reality of collaborating with someone of John’s caliber.
