Beck

Beck can be classified as a musician in the truest sense of the word, as he is known to specialize in a number of different genres. His wide-ranging talents have a lot to do with his upbringing. Initially he was only really interested in folk music and was even akin to a busker in his youth. However, he eventually became adept in hip-hop culture. He even went on to learn how to breakdance in the process. And this was largely due to the fact that he grew up in a predominantly-Latino community in L.A.

Beck’s youth was also defined by his rebellious spirit. For instance, he dropped out of junior high and subsequently took up a number of less-than-ideal employment opportunities. Moreover around the time he was 19 he migrated to NYC, with less than $10 in his pocket, accompanied only by his guitar. And throughout it all he remained dedicated to learning and performing music.

His breakthrough came via his third album, Mellow Gold, in 1994. Said project made it onto the top 20 of the Billboard 200 and achieved platinum status in the US and Canada.  It also produced a single, “Loser”, which was an international hit. And in between 1993 and 2019 Beck has actually released 14 studio albums total.
