Bring Me the Horizon’s “Parasite Eve” Lyrics Meaning

Succinctly put, “Parasite Eve” is based on the theme of a deadly virus spreading throughout the populace. And the way the band presents the situation is as if it is a hopeless one indeed. In other words, ‘boarding up your windows’ and constantly “washing your hands” ultimately is not going to do anything to prevent you from catching it. And they conclude the song by exclaiming that they do not have the power to “save you”.

“Please remain calm, the end has arrived”

Is this based on the 2020 Pandemic?

Of course considering the moment in which this track was released, one would logically presume that it is based on the coronavirus which even within the hour this song has been dropped is re-rearing its ugly head in America. However, such is not the case. The title of the track, “Parasite Eve”, was actually derived from a popular Japanese videogame and novel of the same name. And Oli Sykes has gone on to point out that this song was actually written about a completely-different, less-lethal Chinese pandemic which broke out in 2019

In fact the band sat on this song for a while, because they actually felt it was inappropriate considering it was intended to be fictional. But instead a mass pandemic did in fact break out – right at their own doorstep at that. Or another way of looking at it is that the song is borderline prophetic. And upon realizing such, they concluded that that would be even more of a reason to drop it.
