“Obey” by Bring Me the Horizon (ft. Yungblud)

Bring Me the Horizon and Yungblud are similar in that they are both countercultural, indeed even revolutionary-minded music acts. And such are the sentiments being relayed in the lyrics of “Obey”. Yes, at certain points they are speaking on behalf of the Man himself. But ultimately whether singing from the perspective of the oppressor or the oppressed, the overall idea is still the same. And that is the system does not want us to truly be free.

Or rather, let’s say that our idea of freedom is a contorted one, for in reality we are brainwashed. And this is manifest for instance by the fact that we live in a troubled world but at the same time are under the impression that everything is cool. Moreover, all of this confusion manifests itself in individuals developing self-destructive tendencies. And throughout it all the powers that be, i.e. the same ones who are responsible for this less-than-favorable reality, require that we “obey” their dictates. It is such complicated notions that the musicians are putting forth via the high-ended allegories used in this song.

“Obey” Facts

“Obey” was written by Yungblud alongside Bring Me the Horizon’s Oli Sykes and Jordan Fish. And the latter two artists also produced the track.

This song was released on 2 September 2020 as the second single from Bring Me the Horizon’s “Post Human” project. “Parasite Eve” was the first single BMTH released from the project in question.

Although this is the first collaboration between Yungblud and Bring Me the Horizon, it can be said that they are related artists. For instance, they share similar ideologies.  Moreover Yungblud has been a fan of his collaborators since his early youth.
