“Carnavoyeur” by Queens of the Stone Age

The title of this song (“Carnavoyeur”) apparently would be a noncanonical portmanteau of the words “carnivore” and “voyeur”. What exactly either of those terms has to do with that’s being put forth is not abundantly clear, or let’s say is a matter of listener interpretation.

In the lyrics, Josh does mention a couple of carnivores, such as vultures and “the king of the jungle” which, as generally understood, would be a lion. But with the latter reference especially, he does so to get a discernible point across. And that would be that at the end of the day all forms of life, both great and small, are equal in that we all die.

So with that in mind, what we’re dealing with here is a philosophical piece which is also part religious.  The philosophical aspect is most prominent, in that what the lyrics are basically preaching is that we need to learn to relish life instead of always striving hard to achieve.

Or as the vocalist puts it, “there’s nothing (he) can do” except “accept” and “enjoy the view”. So it is apparent that would be where the voyeur aspect of the song’s title comes into play, via Homme advising us to enjoy the view of life, so to speak, rather than constantly worrying ourselves with strivations.

And as for what can be deemed the brief religious element, the singer also puts forth that “the only sin is waiting too long”. But spiritual connotations aside, that’s basically a roundabout way that we are doing ourselves an injustice by procrastinating in terms of making an effort to genuinely appreciate life.

“When there’s nothing I can do
Accept, enjoy the view
When there’s nothing I can do
I smile”
