“Emotion Sickness” by Queens of the Stone Age

In his own special way, what Josh Homme is speaking to in “Emotion Sickness” is being the victim of unrequited love. Or as the singer puts it, his “baby don’t care for” him. And as presented, this doesn’t read like a case in which the vocalist was able to solidly come to that conclusion earlier in the relationship.

Rather he is someone who appears to be truly in love. He is genuinely perturbed by the realization that he and the his significant other cannot get along.

As such stories tend to go, i.e. being heartbroken, it seems as if Homme even proceeds to advise listeners against falling in love in the first verse. And this is after taking a similar stance in “Sicily”, the track that precedes this one on the playlist of “In Times New Roman…”.

As far as the title goes, as implied by the lyrics, “emotion sickness” can be taken as, let’s say the less-than-ideal emotional side effect of being smitten. It’s the type of feeling you get once you realize that the person you loves so much obviously doesn’t feel the same about you.

“Don’t care for me
Baby don’t care for me
Had to let her go, oh
Baby don’t care for me
Baby don’t care for me
Had to let her go, oh”
