“Negative Space” by Queens of the Stone Age

The lyrics of this song revolve around a motif whereas the vocalist is floating in space, slowly but surely drifting out into oblivion. That sensation, of course, is metaphorical. And from early on, Josh establishes that what he’s actually speaking to is his troubled relationship with the addressee.

As implied, he is more or less placing the blame for this reality on this other party, depicting her as being untrustworthy and someone who is not as true to the relationship as he is. To note, there aren’t any lyrics which would directly indicate that this song is based on a romance. But all things considered, we can take it as such, since for instance the vocalist instructs the addressee to “don’t say you love me no more”.

But that said, what’s being put forth really isn’t that specific. What they do effectively relay nonetheless is an emotion or feeling. And that would be akin to the vocalist unwantingly being on the verge of losing the one he loves yet at same time feeling powerless to prevent that from transpiring.

“There’s gotta be someway back to earth
I’m drifting away as the world turns
We’ll never get back to where we were
Facing oblivion, there’s no words”
