“Made to Parade” by Queens of the Stone Age
Oftentimes, breaking down a Queens of the Stone Age song doesn’t come easy. For instance, this piece has three choruses, all of which are worded differently. But perhaps the best way of describing the term “made to parade” in context is as a sarcastic way of saying that someone was destined to be a celebrity.
Or put otherwise, this is one of those types of songs that is obviously critical of the entertainment industry, not only in terms of how stars are treated, not only in terms of how it deals with stars but more notably the sacrifices such individuals make to get to such an esteemed position to begin with.
And as depicted, striving to be an A-lister, if you will, may not require selling your soul per se, but it does entail sacrificing “your best years” and, as seemingly inferred as the thesis sentiment of the track, one’s sense of personal dignity. So conclusively, it’s as if Josh and co. are criticizing celebrity culture on all levels, from employer to employee to followers.
