“Cold” by James Blunt

In the song “Cold”, James Blunt is addressing a lover whom he is separated from by a great distance, indeed even “an ocean”. In other words, the first verse sets the scene as him being engaged in a long-distance romance. And basically, all of the symbolism used throughout the track point to the idea of Blunt missing his partner, as in lamenting the fact that he cannot be with her physically. And the primary metaphor he uses to relay this sentiment is that of him being “cold”. That is to say that the title is based on the idea of the singer being “just cold”, as in lacking warmth in his life. This can be interpreted in a number of different ways. But most likely, it simply alludes to the idea of the singer perceiving a palpable, discomforting lack in his life due to his sweetheart not being around.

Another way of looking at it is that the singer is expressing an emotional dependency on his significant other in general. That is to say the primary emotion he is displaying  has an overall applicability even outside of the setting of a long-distance relationship. And it can be applied to anyone who feels this way about the absence of their lover.

But for the most part, it would appear that Blunt is indeed spatially separated from the addressee (the woman he loves) with no apparent end to the situation in the foreseeable future.  Thus he is reduced to mourning just how “cold” his life is without her.

Lyrics of "Cold"

Are the lyrics of Blunt’s “Cold” autobiographical?

We strongly believe they are. The touching and profound lyrics of the track are obviously being sung to someone very special to Blunt. And it’s beyond obvious that that person is none other than Sofia Wellesley (whom Blunt married in 2014). Blunt and his wife Sofia welcomed a son in 2016. But why are we so sure that these lyrics are about Sofia? Simply because Blunt has referred to this song and its entire album as “very personal”. According to him, the record is his “most honest” album to date. In a statement, he referred to this song and the others on the album as being about his “life experiences”.

I’m pretty sure we have another “You’re beautiful” here. Certainly the heartbreaking refrain has become an instant earworm for me. Love it!

This video is clearly a sequel to You’re Beautiful. He washes up onshore wearing only jeans, which was all he wore when he dived into the water. When he finds his belongings, these are the same things he took off in You’re Beautiful: ring, sneakers, white t-shirt with black edge, hooded jacket. So he’s come full circle.
