“The Truth” by James Blunt

On “The Truth” the narrator (James blunt) is addressing a romantic interest. James has been trying to thoroughly enjoy life, i.e. ‘chasing highs’, without her. But such efforts have proven to be acts of vanity, for he has not found contentment. Rather what it has all seemingly led to is him coming to the understanding of just how integral the addressee is to his overall happiness. Thus he is on a search to secure this lady’s love.

And the implication is that she may well be his ex-girlfriend. Therefore she can also be counted amongst ‘everything he has lost’. But unlike other aspects of his life which James has parted ways with, he has once again come to realize that she, succinctly put, is someone that he cannot live without. Indeed at the end of the day, whether he is trying to rekindle a romance with this person or initiate a new one, “the truth” is that she is someone whom he needs.
