“Dear Alcohol” by Dax

As the story goes Dax, upon making a name for himself on the music scene, migrated from his native Canada to the more industry-friendly Los Angeles. Now we already know after having analyzed his 2021 track “Dear Mom” that he’s a bit of a family-oriented fellow. And as reported, being out there like that, presumably on his own, presented some challenges for Dax, i.e. the vocalist becoming addicted to booze. It is precisely from that experience that “Dear Alcohol” was born.

Lyrics of “Dear Alcohol”

As revealed in the chorus, Dax relied on this substance for the same reason many of us do, which is basically as a means to hide from a less-than-ideal reality. But as also implied, things went too far. So in this case when the vocalist refers to ‘getting wasted’, he’s not doing so in some sort of celebratory manner. Instead, the situation got so bad that Dax became ‘someone he didn’t recognize’.

And even if a listener doesn’t know the background of this song, it becomes pretty clear that the vocalist did in fact go through the motions. For instance, in the first verse we find Dax admitting to a reliance on morning boozing, only to find himself later in the day ‘pouring it in the sink’. Furthermore, besides for depression, he also drinks as a means of staving off loneliness. This therefore implies that his addiction is not only physically but also socially-based.

In the second verse, we find Dax acknowledging that he’s a music star and thus by default a role model to children. That’s another reason why he’s stressed out by his drunkenness. Afterwards, honestly the vocalist goes through a bit of moping, relaying how he cares for others, but such affection is not reciprocated.

At the end of the day, the verses themselves ultimately conclude with the rapper asking the Lord to ‘help him with the pain and pressure’, so that he wouldn’t be compelled to keep abusing the bottle.

Ultimately, the song doesn’t reveal if Dax actually kicked the habit or not. But by the looks of things, he has committed himself to sobriety. And also, some listeners dealing with alcohol addiction have found this song inspirational.

“I got wasted ’cause I didn’t wanna deal with myself tonight
My thoughts get drowned until I feel alright
I keep drinkin’ ’til I’m someone I don’t recognize
I got wasted”
