Meaning of “Wine Pon You” by Doja Cat (ft. Konshens)

The title of this song (“Wine Pon You”) is rendered in patois with the featured vocalist, Konshens, actually being a Jamaican dancehall artist. And translated into formal English, what it would read is “Whine Upon You”.

Whining, as you may already know, is a sexualized style of dance made popular by the likes of Konshens, i.e. contemporary West Indian musicians. And what it entails, most notably, is a female slowly gyrating her hips.

So it can be easily gathered, even before diving into the lyrics, that what Doja Cat is referring to is an act akin to giving the addressee a lap dance. But it is quickly established in the first verse that she is indeed referring to whining, i.e. committing said act upon the recipient while standing up in a club, i.e. while the two of them are dancing.

“How I wine pon you
The way I wine pon you
How I wine pon you
The way I wine pon you, yeah
Take it you just like the way I wine pon you
Take it you just like the way I wine pon you, yeah”

The post-chorus that comes shortly thereafter, as held down by a singer called Troy NōKA, verifies that what this is meant to point to is Doja biggin’ up her sexual prowess.

The beginning of the second verse proceeds to steer the listener in that direction, i.e. Cat celebrating her ability to turn men on. But by the time all is said and done, the narrative becomes a bit more mature. For instance, the vocalist clarifies that despite how sexily she may whine in the club, it’s a strictly a look-but-don’t-touch kind of affair.

Furthermore, she knows that these dudes who be sweating her have girlfriends, and Doja even expresses a sense of sympathy for such ladies. So it’s as if the star vocalist is acknowledging that she’s a sex symbol alright, one whom you can ‘catch in Vogue or Hustler magazine’, but she’s not out to destroy anyone’s relationship or come off like a straight-up ho.

But that disposition does not prevent Konshens from staging a confident attempt to “make [her] underwear fly” nonetheless. In other words, he takes on the role of the playas in the club. And as implied, his goal is to have actual sex, not just settle for a whining. But either way, what he does proceed to ultimately verify is that some females, such as his co-star, are really effective in getting guys aroused via sexy dance moves.
