“Faneto” by Chief Keef

From the onset, Chief Keef establishes the motif of this song (“Faneto”) by letting the listener know that “gang [is up in] this b*tch”. That’s another way of saying that we should expect this to serve as an ode to his gang, with Sosa actually establishing a label called Glo Gang, shortly before this song was dropped.

But beyond that, we can also safely say that Keef is akin to a real-life gangbanger. So what this song primarily focuses on, especially as far as the first verse and chorus go, is the idea that if inspired, the vocalist has no issue with resorting to the gat to settle grievances.

In fact one of verifiable inspirations behind this song occurred when some goons in Elizabeth, one of the more popular parts of the Garden State, made an attempt on Keef’s chain. That’s why he goes about asserting that he’s “finna (to) blow New Jersey”. This of course made the locals upset, though Chief later inferred that he’s specifically referring to the dudes that tried to rob him.

But that said, songs like this aren’t really about making friends anyway. Instead the goal is to prove that the vocalist is living that life, both streetwise and in terms of generating dollars. As such, the second verse is mainly filled with allusions to Keef’s wealth.

Takeaway

Meanwhile, all lyrics considered it appears that the title is actually a variant of the word finito. Finito is how you say “finished” in Italian. But as used in this piece, it rather points to, as verified by Genius, the rapper robbing somebody. However, in a more general-street context, a word like “finito” may be something a person utters after committing a homicide, as inspired by say a mafia film.

Facts about “Faneto”

By the looks of things “Faneto” has not charted, nor has it been certified in any country as of yet. But it is a fan favorite amongst Chief’s discography. For example, it has garnered an impressive 40 million views on YouTube, proving to pundits that Sosa is in fact a legitimate rapper.

Another testament to this track’s enduring popularity is that even though it didn’t get its own video upon release (not even being a single), it was eventually granted one in early 2016.

Upon entering the industry in 2014, Keef was signed by Interscope Records, one of the biggest labels in the game. However, they cut him shortly thereafter, apparently due to less than ideal sales of “Finally Rich” (2012), his debut album as well as the fact that he was constantly in trouble with the law. This gave Keef more independence, and accordingly he has come out with a slew of mixtapes since.

Faneto” is part of one of such projects entitled “Back from the Dead 2”. It was released on 2 October 2014,

Keef served as primary producer of “Back from the Dead 2” and also held down that role on “Faneto”, in addition to being the song’s sole writer.

Keef received some assistance from record producers, 808 Mafia, Young Chop and Ace Bankz in producing the project.

The mixtape was released through the rapper’s own record label, Glo Gang Records and RBC Records, an American online record label.
