“Hot Girl Summer” by Megan Thee Stallion (ft. Nicki Minaj & Ty Dolla $ign)

The title of this song (Hot Girl Summer) is actually derived from the titular catchphrase, which began blowing up on Twitter a couple of months prior to the track’s release. The term “hot girl summer” evolved from a random Twitter post which went super viral. Megan Thee Stallion wasted no time adopting the term as part of an overall marketing campaign. And that leads us to this song, which she dropped alongside hip-hop superstars Nicki Minaj and Ty Dolla $ign.

Anyone familiar with rap music knows how popular male artists like to present themselves as bedroom conquerors. Indeed even Ty Dolla $ign himself comes off like that during the chorus of this selfsame feministic track. But more notably, Megan Thee Stallion and Nicki Minaj are also presenting themselves as such – women who use and abuse men at their own discretion. Put differently, they’re flipping the scripts, as in basically presenting themselves as female playas.

When asked the definition of the term “hot girl”, Megan described it, succinctly put, as being “a bad [expletive]”.  Yes, the term has a non-gender application also, as in referring to members of both genders who aren’t afraid to express themselves and have fun. But for the most part, as is evident, it is a term that applies to females. And within the specific context of this song, that idea would seem to point to their exercising more control over their romantic destinies. Or more specifically, the ladies have options in men, even a whole “team” of them, just like say a male rapper would brag about having a lot of women. So at the end of the day which one of them they spend time with is based on their own personal preferences. And they are not keen on the idea of getting locked down with just one dude.

Meanwhile Ty Dolla serves the purpose of celebrating their lifestyle. Concurrently, he is also trying to pick them up. He is interested in getting a “hot girl” in the sack because he is convinced he can satisfy her and is apparently intrigued by the prospect of just enjoying an exciting time with her.
