“If I Hated You” by FLETCHER

FLETCHER’s “If I Hated You” finds the narrator seemingly not being able to let go of her previous relationship. She wishes that she hated him instead because it would have been much easier for her to move on. But sadly this isn’t the case. She finds herself in a situation where she may still have deep feelings for this person.

Her reason for being unable to move on is that this person was actually a good match for her but somehow, they couldn’t work things out. Although she wishes for them to come back together, she is also scared that if she decides to move on, he might find a replacement for her.

The narrator further expresses her distress over the separation by revealing that she has a hard time going to bed at night because her mind is often filled with thoughts of him. In the bridge, she pleads to be able to talk things over and restore their affair. Seeing that her wish may not be granted, she tells herself that it will be easier to forget him if she replaces her love for him with hatred.
