“Better Version” by FLETCHER

Contemporary musicians appear to be getting more creative in terms of relaying feelings of romantic disappointment. Gone are the days of simply lamenting a broken heart, and now musical artists appear to be getting a bit more specific in terms of how such failures have adversely affected them.

You can view the lyrics, alternate interprations and sheet music for FLETCHER's Better Version at Lyrics.org.

For instance, “Better Version” is premised on Fletcher having dealt with an issue that we can say many young women have to contend with, which is falling in love with someone who obviously had maturity issues and was not fully developed when they hooked up. But this isn’t one of those cases of such a lady eventually getting fed up and giving her love the boot.

And yes, we know that Fletcher is by and large a lesbian, and no gender pronouns are used in this song. But we are utilizing them in this analysis for the sake of readability, as it does feel implied that she’s speaking to a male.

So this vocalist stuck with him through all of his shortcomings, helping the addressee master his emotional and drug issues. She also helped him to build up his confidence as well as career and even taught him how to bonk more effectively.

Indeed now when you see him, unlike days past, he’s visibly “a star”. In other words, some other chick is the recipient of all of Fletcher’s efforts. And that is what she is beefing about more specifically, as indicated by the title, that homegirl is getting “the better version” of the addressee at his original girlfriend’s expense.

The Conclusion

Reading in between the lines, what the vocalist is basically accusing the addressee is not reciprocating her love or just being grimy in general. When he was down, she picked him up. But now that she’s in her feelings, he’s apparently disinterested in trying to mitigate her pain.

FYI, it has been suggested that these lyrics were inspired by Fletcher’s past romance with one Shannon Beveridge, who is a social-media star.

Fletcher is an out and proud woman-loving lesbian, not “by and large a lesbian”. So that’s pretty insulting to the LGBTQI+ community. Not she’s not singing to a “male”. Her songs are about women. Check yourself and your cis privilege.
