“Is There Someone Else?” by The Weeknd

“Is There Someone Else?” laments the unfaithfulness of a romantic partner, Weeknd style. That is to say that this isn’t the case of a vocalist, who is convinced he’s being cheated on by the woman he loves, coming off as some type of innocent, distraught crybaby. To the contrary, The Weeknd is well under the impression that this whole situation is karma coming back to bite him in the ass, so to speak.

But that said, he is still very much in his feelings. It can be deduced that now being on the receiving end of a cheating has made the vocalist more sorrowful for his own past infidelities. But more the point is the fact that as it currently stands, he is in complete emotional turmoil.

Or let’s say that he’s in a state where the disturbing prospect of his woman being unfaithful is the foremost thing on his mind. And even though he doesn’t appear to have any solid evidence, being experienced in the game himself the vocalist knows the types of signs lovers display, as his girlfriend is currently doing, when they’re being adulterous.

So what he is trying to definitively ascertain, as illustrated by the title, is whether the addressee is seeing “someone else” or not. Or phrased differently in context, The Weeknd wants to know if he has any competition for his woman’s heart. And if so, by the looks of things he’s going to make conscientious effort to lock her down, i.e. prove that his love is genuine and preferable to the other guy’s.
