“Dawn FM” by The Weeknd (ft. Jim Carrey)

“Dawn FM” is the opening and title track to The Weeknd’s fifth studio album. It serves as a spoken intro held down primarily by Jim Carrey. And as implied by its moniker, this project is based on a radio station inspired motif. In this song, Jim Carrey is presented as the main DJ of the fictional “Dawn FM” radio channel.

Another motif upon which the “Dawn FM” is based is The Weeknd’s estimation of how the afterlife must be, particularly being stuck in what is known as purgatory.

The goal of this radio station is supposed to be, in Abel’s own words, to bring listeners to “the light at the end of the tunnel”. That is why we find related terminology in these lyrics, i.e. the primary vocalist also stating that he and his coworkers intended to “guide you through this painless transition”, i.e. going from purgatory into heaven, so to speak.

And of course anyone who is familiar with the primary vocalist, Jim, knows that he is first and foremost a comedian. Therefore the logical presumption, considering that this is the intro to the album, would be that there’s a comedic element permeating throughout this project, even if it is set on subjects as serious as death and afterlife judgment.
