Lizzo’s “Jerome” Lyrics Meaning

According to Lizzo’s own words the addressee of this song, “Jerome”, is what is colloquially refers to as a “f—boy”.  The easiest way to describe such an individual is one with the appearance of a man yet a boy’s mind, particularly when it comes to dealing with women. And in fact it seems that the aspect of his being which really appeals to Lizzo is his looks. But now in her mind the relationship has run its course. So she is basically giving him the boot. And she is telling him that he shouldn’t come back around until he has matured and is more interested in actually doing what he must in order to perpetuate the romance.

Moreover the implication is that he is heartbroken over being dumped. But at this point she doesn’t care. Rather the narrator refuses to continue to inconvenience herself via her relationship with “Jerome”.

Atlantic Records and Nice Life Recording Co. released Lizzo’s third album, “Cuz I Love You”, which featured this song. The release date was the 19th of April 2019.

It is hypothesized that “Jerome” is actually a reference a real-life ex-boyfriend of Lizzo’s. However, she has been reluctant in terms of stating exactly who it is.

This song earned Lizzo a 2020 Grammy Award in the category of Best Traditional R&B Performance.
