“Love Goes On” by Brett Young

It seems that in “Love Goes On”, the addressee of the first and second verses are respectively two different people. The former would be the vocalist’s first love and the latter a romantic interest he’s become acquainted with more recently. And for the most part the lyrics do focus on the former or more specifically the philosophical lesson Brett learned by having his heart broken by her. And that would be that “love goes on”.

A different way of looking at the titular statement, in context, is as pointing to the notion that losing the one you love isn’t the end of the world. Or put otherwise yet again, whereas Young may have been devastated upon initially learning, the hard way, that romance doesn’t always turn out as idealized, he has subsequently adapted to living with that reality and furthermore chalking up such experiences to “lessons learned”.

But that doesn’t mean that he wasn’t affected or has a que-sera-sera type of attitude.  The second verse goes on to illustrate that in the aftermath of being emotionally crushed by his first love, the vocalist had become doubtful and “defensive” in the field of romance. But by the looks of things, as implied in the second verse, he has since met a romantic interest who would give up on him, ‘breaking his heart down’ as well showing interest in who or what made Brett like this to begin with.

So in a way, the thesis sentiment of “love goes on” is twofold. It can be taken as a celebration of the fact that romance is achievable even after a person has had his heart broken in love. But that titular statement also, all lyrics considered, is a reminder that yet and still, the singer is compelled to think about that initial heartbreak.

“But lovе goes on, pages turn
Ends to songs, lessons learned
Sometimes it’s here and then it’s gone
But that’s okay, love goes on
Love goes on”
