Meaning of “Enchanted (Taylor’s Version)” by Taylor Swift

The first verse of “Enchanted” sorta implies that the meeting between the vocalist and addressee was a chance one, but in actuality this song is based on the first time Taylor Swift met Adam Young, with said encounter being one they planned after chatting online a couple of times.

In any event, whether the meeting was planned or not, the thesis sentiment reads the same. We initially come across Taylor in a public venue, “forcing laughter” and “faking smiles” amidst “walls of insincerity” and “shifting eyes of vacancy”, i.e. not deriving any pleasure from the fake people she’s interacting with.

But then enters Adam, and immediately Swift is smitten. Even more importantly, upon interacting the two of them proceed to exhibit a genuine rapport. Therefore, the vocalist is able to ascertain that there really is some genuine romantic potential here.

An Enchanting Situation

So basically, this proved to be one an “enchanting” situation in which Swift continued to spend the entire night, into the wee hours of the morning, thinking about Young. But when they met, she obviously didn’t get around to asking him if he had a girlfriend. So besides this being a case of love at first sight, she’s also hoping that he isn’t “in love with someone else”.

By the time all was said and done, Taylor and Adam never became an idea. But as alluded to earlier, the lyrics of this song firmly recognize that Swift was aware that such was a possibility, even if at the time she was “praying” that special evening “was the very first page” in what would prove to be a meaningful relationship.

So basically, “Enchanted” serves the purpose of memorializing that meeting. Or as the songstress puts forth in the chorus, she’s not sure if the addressee fully appreciates just how ‘flawless that night’ was in her heart, being one that she will never forget.

“This night is sparklin’, don’t you let it go
I’m wonderstruck, blushin’ all the way home
I’ll spend forever wonderin’ if you knew
I was enchanted to meet you”
