Meaning of “Gone, Gone / Thank You” by Tyler, the Creator

“Gone, Gone / Thank You” is a breakup song and ultimately, in terms of what’s being put forth sentimentally, a pretty-standard one at that. But Tyler, the Creator can be counted as an above-average lyricist, so he is able to relay this well-worn subject matter in a fresh way.

And part of that freshness, as in this song being lyrically unconventional, is found in the fact that during certain segments it is implied that the addressee, i.e. Tyler’s estranged lover who has him so emotional, is a fellow man.

As depicted, said individual put the vocalist under the impression that he or she was serious about moving their relationship forward, only to later, most simply put, dump Tyler upon finding a new lover. So the rapper endured what may be considered, from an emotional standpoint, as the worst breakup scenario imaginable, i.e. knowing that the person you love and have an established romance has chosen someone they more recently met over you.

And as implied the signs were there, but he never took them seriously until it was too late, i.e. until the addressee was “gone”.

But that said, as indicated on the “Thank You” part of the track, their relationship was a loving and joyful one nonetheless, and the vocalist appreciates the addressee in terms of the role s/he played in making that possible. However, as indicative of someone who is truly, if you will, suffering from a broken heart, Tyler concurrently expresses a lack of desire to “ever… fall in love again”.

“Whether it’s rain or shine, I know I’m fine for now
My love’s gone, my love’s gone
My love’s gone, oh, gone
(Two, three, go)
Or maybe it’s just a dream that I can’t seem to wake up from
My love’s gone, my love’s gone
My love’s gone, gone”
