Hey Whiskey

The Lyrics of “Hey Whiskey”

As implied by the song’s title, in the lyrics we find the vocalist addressing whiskey itself. For the rare reader who may be unaware of what whiskey is, it’s a popular, and may we also say relatively-tasty type of drinking alcohol. Furthermore, it is one which the likes of country musicians seem to favor.

But this song is not one of those kinds which for one reason or another celebrates a sound boozing. Yes, Tim does proceed to depict whiskey as a steady companion, one whom he has spent all of his money and apparently years of his time in the name of nurturing a relationship with.

But by the time all has been said and done, the vocalist feels betrayed by the beverage. That is to say, most notably, that McGraw is blaming what reads like an alcohol addiction on losing his significant other.

Indeed, the bridge all but verifies that he is portraying the role of an addict, i.e. a character who has come to realize that whiskey has had a detrimental effect on his life’s trajectory, yet he is still unable to ‘put it down’.

So ultimately, it can be argued that Tim is relaying a message here. And that would be along the lines of illustrating that ‘giving everything’ over to one’s affinity for alcohol is akin to a fool’s investment.

“I let you stay, you made her leave
Made me say things I don’t mean
To the only girl that ever made me choose
Gave you everything I had
Went to hell and can’t get back
The only thing I couldn’t stand to lose
Hey, whiskey
Hey, whiskey, what’d I ever do to you?”
