Lyrics of “I’m Alice”

Alice Cooper has insinuated that “Road” is a project which is meant to put more of a focus on the musical skills of himself and his band as opposed to his controversial stage antics, which historically tend to generate more headlines than his actual sound.

And this particular song is sort of a synthesis of those two realities. On one hand, it can be gleaned that the singer is speaking to the efficacy of his music, with this track serving the purpose of celebrating or announcing, to Alice’s established fandom, that he has a new album out.

But in that regard, Cooper also goes about celebrating himself as “the master of madness”, “the sultan of surprise” and “the father of fright”. In other words, as alluded in the second verse, he knows what differentiates him from other rock musicians are those selfsame stage tactics, with the vocalist noting that “it takes more than a mask to make more than a thrill”.

And in the third verse, he seemingly alludes to being attacked by cancel culture, such as Alice less than a month ago losing a contract due to criticizing the concept of children transitioning genders.

So on this particular track, Cooper does speak more to his mind-boggling stage persona than his music per se.  Alice understands that what he’s become known for more than anything is keeping it real, in a manner of speaking, and therefore that’s what his fans expect from him and what he has remained dedicated to.
