Meaning of “Welcome to the Show” by Alice Cooper

Sentiment-wise, “Welcome to the Show” is somewhat similar to “I’m Alice”, the song that precedes it on the playlist of “Road”. However in this case, Cooper is more specifically celebrating his notoriety as a stage performer as opposed to just alluding to it.

Indeed, in a roundabout way and in reference to the release of this new album, Alice has acknowledged that he is known more as a performer than musician per se.

Furthermore in explaining this project, his goal is seemingly to try to reverse that perception. But again, in the case of this song he is reveling in the likes of the makeup he wears on stage and his efficacy in making the crowd “scream” (which may be an allusion to the efficacy of his heavy sound also).

Or viewed from a different angle, Alice knows that his stage performances are especially and uniquely memorable. And truth be told that’s not a claim that most musicians can make, i.e. their character being more interesting than their sound.

So Cooper’s stage persona has sorta become his shtick, if you will.  And that would be why on this track, he’s biggin’ up his own “show”.  And being that this is just the second track on the playlist of the album, it can also be taken as sort of an introductory song to the project at large.

“Welcome to the show
Welcome to the show
Are you ready to ride to the other side?
You know you wanna go
Welcome to the night
You’re gonna feel the fright
Welcome to the show”

When was “Welcome to the Show” released?
