“The Big Goodbye” by Alice Cooper

The logical presumption would be that this song is romantic in nature, i.e. the addressee being someone who Alice has had a fling with. And the lyrics read somewhat like those of Eminem’s 2002 track Superman. That is to say that, as implied, the addressee is someone who is looking for a serious relationship from the vocalist. But as for the latter, he’s not on it like that at all. Instead, Alice acknowledges himself as sort of a rolling stone, a transient soul who, all things considered, is not interested in settling down.

And besides that, being “a liar and a schemer” and all, he’s not even the type of guy, i.e. “a hero from a fairytale”, “saint or shining knight”, that the vocalist is hoping for. So it’s as if the message of this song serves as a way of letting women whom the vocalist may get into a relationship know that they should not disillusion themselves into thinking that it’s anything serious. And that isn’t because Alice already has a wife (which he does). Rather, it’s because Cooper isn’t interested in falling in love. So for romantic interests who may convince themselves otherwise, eventually comes “the big goodbye”, i.e. him unceremoniously dumping them, basically.

“You went to all that trouble
I hate to burst your bubble
But here comes the big goodbye”
