Meaning of “Kick It” by Lil Nas X
The plotline of this song is similar to that of Eminem’s rap classic, “Stan” (2000). As with “Stan”, in “Kick It” Lil Nas X takes on the role of a fan who is a annoyed with him. He is apparently a former associate of Lil Nas X. And as the title suggests he desires to “kick it”, as in spend time socializing, with the rapper. And the way he is trying to attract Nas X to him is with fire “weed”, as in “good” ganja.
What truly makes this song similar to “Stan” is not so much that Lil Nas approaches it from a fan’s perspective. Rather, it is the fact that said fan also adores him and, after apparently not receiving the desired response, turns on the rapper. But in this case he does not set out to physically harm anyone. Rather in the second verse he goes on a tirade by expressing a sentiment many feel about Nas X after the phenomenal success of “Old Town Road”, which is basically labeling the rapper as a one-hit wonder.
So in summation, this track centers on an obsessed fan of Lil Nas X who is upset that he is not given the opportunity to chill with the rapper. And considering the line “we was cool” in the chorus, the insinuation is that he may have been personally associated with him in the past, i.e. before he blew up.
