Meaning of “Orange Trees” by Marina

Marina is generally classified as a Welsh singer. However, that particular part of her ancestry is derived from her mother’s side. As for her father, he is Greek.  And although Marina spent most of her childhood in Wales with her mom, at the age of 16 she did move to Greece not only to be with her dad but also to familiarize herself with that part of her heritage, including learning to speak the Hellenic language. And apparently that experience had a profound effect on her as she has now dedicated her new single, “Orange Trees”, to her appreciation of the Greek island that she comes from.

As can be implied by the title, one of the things she appreciates the most about that place is its natural setting, not only the titular orange trees but also the “flowers”, “greenery”, “air” and “sea”. According to the song, being there has a soothing effect on her being.

Indeed due to its remote location, this island offers her respite from the “neon lights and city streets” she is likely more than used to growing up and being based in the United Kingdom. Overall being in her Greek hometown allows Marina to enjoy the simple pleasures of life. And what are some of these pleasures of life? They include watching the sunset on the horizon of the sea and enjoying the leisurely, undisturbed company of a close associate. And ultimately spending time at this location enables her to perceive a beauty in life as well as imbuing Marina with a sense of freedom.
