“On My Mind” by Diplo & Sidepiece
“On My Mind” is one of those dance pieces where the lyrics are a cut and loop of vocals from an older song. So even though it is possible to flesh together a narrative, such is not necessarily the intended point as much as relaying a feeling. And that sentiment is that the vocalist is enamored with the addressee.
As far as piecing together a story goes, it’s clear that the vocalist intends to make an effort to get closer to this person. Moreover, she is letting him know that if the two of them do take it there, she’s not the type to publicize their interactions.
So maybe the implication, if we wanted to be imaginative, is that said addressee already has a girlfriend or some other reason he may want to keep a relationship with the vocalist private. But getting that deep into the analysis would rather require us going back to the song the vocals are sampled from, which is 702’s Steelo. And in any event, the way said vocals sampled onto “On My Mind”, as alluded to earlier, is not really meant to be read into that deeply anyway. And that’s because more to the point, as indicated by the title, is the vocalist having strong feelings for the addressee.

NOTE: “On My Mind” samples the 1996 702 and Missy Elliot hit song titled “Steelo”. This is the reason why Elliot is featured as one of the writers of “On My Mind”. And the reason Sting is also featured as one of the co-writers is because The Police’s song with the title “Voices Inside My Head” is sampled in “Steelo”.
